Job Description:

We are seeking a highly capable and motivated Electrical Engineer with experience in the technical, regulatory, and commercial aspects of grid connections and renewable energy projects in North America.  You will support offshore wind developers throughout the grid connection process, beginning from the early site finding / grid feasibility assessment, concept and feasibility studies, grid connection applications and offer reviews from the network operators, assisting with curtailment assessments, through to the management of the compliance process on behalf of the client.  You will have the opportunity to work on offshore and onshore projects globally.

In this role you will also work on specialist power system studies for the connection of different generator technologies and energy storage systems to the electrical grid and lead and/or contribute to other types of projects including technical due diligence, delivering training sessions, engineering tasks within the broader field of engineering, and acting as Owner’s Engineer or Technical Advisor.

A successful candidate will be a leader and strong communicator, with strong and power systems experience with offshore/onshore projects, project management skills, and a clear ability to lead proposals, manage client relationships, both internally and externally.

 

Requirements:

  • Providing applied engineering and specialist technical consulting services to clients in the electricity sector including renewable energy plants, large energy users and network owners/operators in the areas of system studies, design, installation, start up, maintenance and training.
  • Lead and coordinate proposal submissions and cost estimates by interpreting specifications and customer inquiries and designing technical proposals and pricing for customers.
  • Provide technical solutions to customers that may involve system or equipment design or upgrades, testing of equipment, solutions relating to increase safety, reliability, or efficiency.
  • Self-management of assigned projects and cost accountability to perform work within budgeted cost estimates.
  • Delivering technical review of the electrical designs required to certify the Wind Turbine Generator (WTG), support structure, offshore platform, and subsea power cables. This may include performing independent calculations / spot-checks of electrical design, e.g. ampacity, arc flash etc.
  • Independently perform electrical power system analysis including power system modelling and performance assessment for design confirmation and protection studies, high level constraint analysis, and high-level network connection assessments and feasibility studies including identifying project risks and providing cost estimates.
  • Analysis and protection coordination of existing and proposed power networks supplying renewable, offshore, industrial and utility projects.
  • Supporting clients throughout the connections process; beginning from early site finding / grid feasibility stages, pre-application discussion with the network operators, grid connection applications and offer reviews, assisting with curtailment assessments, through to the management of the compliance process on behalf of the client.
  • Managing distribution and transmission connection applications for onshore and offshore wind farms, Solar PV generators, CHP / biomass plants, Wave and Tidal arrays, hydro generators, and energy storage systems.
  • Liaising with Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs), Independent System Operators (ISOs), State regulatory agencies, and utilities on behalf of developers, both pre-application and post-offer, attend project meetings and teleconferences as required to progress the client’s agenda.
  • Supporting clients through the post Connection Offer acceptance period through to commissioning and testing.
  • Leading and/or contribute to other types of projects including technical due diligence, management of connection studies (grid code compliance), delivering training sessions, power systems analysis, engineering tasks within the broader field of engineering, and acting as Owner’s Engineer or Technical Advisor.
  • Supporting local business development including calls, meetings, and marketing activity to generate new business.  Undertake sales / business presentations to sell and promote services and develop and manage key customers.
  • Attend relevant conferences and workshops to maintain visibility and identify business opportunities.
  • Follow-up with onsite witness of fabrication and transport & installation activities in the US as required.
  • Writing of technical reports.
  • Mentoring junior staff with respect to running power system studies.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • At least 5-7 years of power systems engineering experience with preference towards wind energy experience, renewable energy and offshore engineering or similar.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license is required (any state is allowed, but it must be in active standing).
  • Power system study experience on utility transmission/distribution systems including stability (transient and dynamic), long/short range planning studies, short circuit, protective relay settings, load flow and contingency analysis, harmonic analysis, and arc flash studies.
  • In depth experience with two or more of the following software packages: DigSILENT PowerFactory, PSS/e, PSCAD, EMTP, PSFL, ETAP, ASPEN OneLiner, SKM/PTW, EasyPower, PVsyst.
  • Experience with technical due diligence, management of connection studies (grid code compliance), delivering training sessions, engineering tasks within the broader field of engineering, and acting as Owner’s Engineer or Technical Advisor.
  • Knowledge of applicable standards and recommendations, e.g., IEC, IEEE, CIGRE, DNV, NFPA, NEMA, UL, etc. and relevant laws, codes and regulations is required.
  • Highly self-motivated and result oriented. Well organized & proactive, able to successfully work in a fast paced and competitive environment with diverse people – clients and co-workers.
  • Excellent networking skills, with a strong and existing network in Renewables, and a track record of proactive business development and client relationship management.
  • Strong commercial attitude and strategic mind-set with the ability to leverage networking skills to identify business opportunities and lead the preparation of proposals, budgets and plans of work.
  • The ability to manage their own time and deliver multiple projects on time/budget, managing client expectations and scope changes as required.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to communicate with clients and colleagues at all levels (written and verbal), organizational, negotiation and public presentation skills.
  • Experience with MS Word, Excel etc.
  • Must be able to work in the US without company sponsorship.
  • Ability to work on projects/meet clients in Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and North Carolina.
  • Willingness and ability to travel

  • A keen sense of the future challenges for the North America energy sector, and in particular the offshore wind industry, with the ability to appreciate a developer’s perspective and identify their priorities.
  • An understanding of transmission system protection principles and practices, including special protection systems, general power system protection concepts, power utilization equipment and application considerations including the various types of switchgear, protective relays, breakers, transformers, and generators.
  • Knowledge and experience of generator compliance/commissioning processes.
  • A network of existing contacts in the North American energy industry.
