Warehouse Automation to Augment Labor, Not Replace

Jul 8, 2019 | Jim Bernier

A recent study on labor augmentation through warehouse automation suggests major changes are on the horizon. Through 2024, the study suggests, forward-thinking fulfillment strategy companies will have to keep up with the on-demand economy. One way to do that is to focus on worker augmentation as part of an overall strategy.

Today’s workspace

Warehouse automation is a complex process with ongoing concerns, and has already been underway for several years. Today, engineers and technicians design, install and program all parts and aspects of a warehouse automation system. That includes conveyor and roller systems, bar code readers, pick-n-place robots, SCADA systems and inventory management software.

After installation and training, maintenance mechanics and maintenance technicians perform routine maintenance, and troubleshoot systems.

The existing workforce’s configuration might change in coming years, but it’s unlikely the labor augmentation will eliminate the human component, according to the study.

Enhance, not replace

About 75 percent of respondents said the human element is important to their optimal operational makeup. Partial augmentation, or some human involvement, was noted by 39 percent of respondents as a preference, and 34 percent cited augmentation, or equipping workers with devices, as their preference.

But what applications will the devices be used for? Inbound inventory management (24 percent), outbound packing (22 percent) and goods in or receiving (20 percent) anticipated by 2024, respondents said.

On-demand economy

It’s not just increased efficiency that decision-makers are looking toward. The on-demand economy means increased consumer demand, meaning investing in and implementing new technologies is critical for remaining competitive.

But even though 77 percent of survey respondents agreed that operations need to be modernized to remain competitive, implementation is slow. It requires new equipment and new software, training and integration—and industry expertise.

If you’re among the 60 percent of organizations citing labor recruitment and/or labor efficiency and productivity among their top challenges, Black-Peak can help.
