Whether you are already aware or not, the market data and daily communications all confirm the growing wave of permanent placements and direct hires in highly technical and roles with specialized skill sets.
The current economic expansion is nearly 10 years old, and that’s very long by historic standards. In the later years of a growth cycle, some clients seek temp-to-perm or direct permanent placements, because qualified labor has become so hard to find. Based on these factors, SIA says permanent placements will grow 5 percent throughout 2019, compared to just 3 percent growth for contingent workers.
With the labor force at its lowest unemployment numbers in years, most all new hires are gainfully employed with other company’s already and therefore will only consider new opportunities which provide a better quality of life and chance for longer term prosperity. When approaching gainfully employed candidates we must consider and temporary or contract opportunities to be viewed by the candidate as risky or leaving their long-term role with something of lesser value to them. They temp assignments for these candidates are viewed as having no long term career growth, advancement nor excellent benefits package.
The point is, if you are serious about hiring the right people, long term, a direct hire and permanent placement approach is what you should be looking at.
As we move ahead into 2020, a softening economy may be in the midst. Once this shift occurs finding temporary staff for highly skilled positions may become more of an option for many skilled workers. For now, direct hire will continue to be the trend.
If you really need a contractor, they are out there too. These candidates will be shopping for the highest bidder so please have double the budget you might consider for the direct hire employee.
